Boise State Homecoming is Tainted by Vandalism

Who vandalized a Black Lives Matter float at Boise State’s homecoming? Campus police want to know.

As of Sunday afternoon, the story had made it to the New York Daily News, and could go viral this week.

The school posted a statement about the vandalism Sunday on Facebook saying, “all Boise State leaders condemn this act and any attempt to quiet the constitutionally protected free speech of students and others on our campus.”  And the university wants to be a safe and welcoming campus for all students.

The Afro-Black Student Alliance created the float for Saturday’s homecoming parade and included names of some recently killed, like Trayvon Martin, Tamil Rice, and Sandra Bland. Those balloons containing the names were popped or taken down before the parade.  The group said on social media that someone tried to wipe off the painted words, “justice” and “unity,” on other balloons, and a sign that said, “black lives matter” went completely missing.

The students involved have been talking about it on Twitter, and they’ve received lots of retweets, high fives, and social media support so far.  Something tells us they’ll have plenty of help building a float for the next parade, but in the meantime call campus security if you have tips on the vandalism.

Oh, and congrats to the Broncos on the 28-23 homecoming win over Colorado State on Saturday night. Boise State is having a great football season at 6-0, and 3-0 in the Mountain West so far.  The bigger story this week though, may be the pesky vandalism and the ripple effect it creates.  We’ll keep you updated.
