This past weekend saw Netflix’s Narcos making a bold transition in its third year, moving on from the story of Pablo Escobar and reinventing the cast around star Pedro Pascal. Even those seemed to fall by the wayside in the finale, however, and now bosses say Narcos Season 4 may be a completely different series.

You’re warned of full spoilers for Narcos Season 3 from here on out, but much as it had in the real world, the world of narco-trafficking eventually shifted from the super-cartels of Colombia to efforts in Mexico. Season 3 followed Pedro Pascal’s Javier Peña (newly-solo without Boyd Holbrook’s Steve Murphy) taking down the four Cali Cartel kingpins, before being invited to lead the charge in a new war on drugs in Mexico.

Season 3 largely grafted the real Javier Peña into the real-world Cali takedown beyond his actual involvement, so might Season 4 do the same? The season’s final moments seemed to suggest Peña’s unease with resigning from the DEA, but Narcos showrunner Eric Newman tells The Hollywood Reporter “I think you can believe his final words,” with Season 3 fulfilling an end to the character:

I do think that we’ve told Pena’s story pretty effectively. “The only way to win is not to play” is a certain aspect of it. He has been irremovably changed by this experience and whether he’ll be happy in his life at home? I would say no. I don’t think it’s a particularly happy ending for him. But I think it’s certainly accepting the futility of this … It’s definitely a defeat for him and his only move is to just say, “I can’t continue to function.” What’s tragic about it is that you’re losing truly one of the good guys. He’s put in positions where he has to do terrible things and does them and comes out of it feeling like he’s probably pretty broken.

Newman also suggested an entirely new Season 4 cast was “definitely on the table,” while envisioning the series could go well beyond Season 4 into the present. We’d certainly understand if Pedro Pascal moved on after three seasons of TV, but who next should lead the Narcos charge into Mexico?

All three seasons are currently available to stream on Netflix.
