Every few years, like clockwork, there’s a firefighter movie. The Towering Inferno, Backdraft, Firestorm, Ladder 49; these films are as inevitable as death and taxes (coincidentally, the things firefighters exist to prevent, and thing that allows firefighters to exist). It’s been a while since the last major firefighter movie, which means it’s time for a new one, with the impressively verbose title Only the Brave: The Story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots. Try fitting that into a tweet! That’s one way to prevent bad social media word-of-mouth.
Apparently based on true events, the film features an all-star cast as a real-life squad of heroic public services. Josh Brolin, Miles Teller, and Jeff Bridges are the leads, and the film also includes James Badge Dayle, Jennifer Connelly, and Taylor Kitsch. Oh, and fire. Lots and lots of fire. Here’s the official synopsis:
All men are created equal… then, a few become firefighters. Only the Brave, based on the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, is the heroic story of one unit of local firefighters that through hope, determination, sacrifice, and the drive to protect families, communities, and our country become one of the most elite firefighting teams in the country. As most of us run from danger, they run toward it – they watch over our lives, our homes, everything we hold dear, as they forge a unique brotherhood that comes into focus with one fateful fire.
This movie could be a total disaster, but “All men are created equal … then, a few become firefighters” will forever be one of the greatest sentences I have ever read in my life. Only the Brave opens in theaters on October 20.
