James Gunn recently took to Facebook to let fans know that he’s done addressing crazy rumors about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which is totally fair — but it also means he won’t be tweeting or Facebook-posting about this latest rumor, which potentially reveals the identity of the villain in the upcoming sequel. And it’s a big one. Bigger than Thanos…in size, anyway.

Take this rumor with a grain of salt, etc., etc., you know the drill, especially as this one originates at Geek.com — a fairly untested site when it comes to scoops. That said, it’s a plausible one, as the site claims that sources close to production have revealed that Ego will be making an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

For the uninitiated, Ego is a living planet that began life in the Black Galaxy, where it evolved and developed organic attributes — like a brain. Ego has consciousness and intelligence, and as such, begins to consider his importance (or ego!) and starts thinking that hey, he’s a pretty powerful planet, maybe he could take over a galaxy or two. Ego has also fought with Thor, the Kree and others…including Thanos.

But as Thanos is sitting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 out (presumably to actually obtain a damn Infinity Stone already), Ego would be a suitable replacement, giving the intergalactic heroes an even bigger (way bigger) and weirder (way weirder) fish to fry.

All of this will remain unconfirmed, of course, for the next several months, as Marvel still has Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange set to hit theaters before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 arrives next year.

Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel and Dave Bautista are set to reprise their roles in the sequel, with Kurt Russell in talks to play Star-Lord’s long-absent father. Oldboy star Pom Klementieff has also joined the cast in a role rumored to be that of Mantis.
