Got Drugs? Come Drop Them Off In Meridian This Weekend!
When discussing the topic of drugs in Idaho, more often than not, the conversations lead to either fentanyl, methamphetamine, or even marijuana.
However, there is another area of drugs that needs to be and will be addressed this weekend: prescription drugs.
Properly Disposing of Prescription Drugs
Sometimes people don't always finish their prescribed drugs, and they wind up sitting in the medicine cabinet. In some cases, this can lead to the drug being misused or even falling into the wrong hands, especially if the prescribed drug is addictive.
According to Idaho's Office of Drug Policy, Idaho has seen an increasing number of drug overdose deaths, with 2,845 Idahoans dying between 2012 and 2022.
The Office of Drug Policy also says that the rate of overdose deaths has increased by 40% from 2018 to 2022. That same report says Idahoans aged 25-54 "had the highest drug overdose death rate by age group, accounting for almost 68% of overdose-related deaths in 2022."
The Meridian Anti-Drug Coalition & Blue Cross Of Idaho Rx Join Forces
Luckily for those of us with unused prescription drugs, there's something we can do to fight back against overdose-related deaths.
The Meridian Anti-Drug Coalition & Blue Cross of Idaho are teaming up to help reduce prescription drug abuse with a take-back day taking place this Saturday.
"Help reduce Rx abuse, swing by our drive through drop-off and safely dispose of any unused or expired medications," the City of Meridian said in a press release.
"Safely disposing of medications can help reduce overdose and risk of diversion."
The take-back event is taking place this Saturday from 10AM to 2PM at Blue Cross of Idaho Headquarters at 3000 E. Pine Ave. in Meridian. If you're unable to make it to the event, organizers say you can stop by the Meridian Police Department Central Station lobby Monday through Friday, 8AM to 5PM and use their drop boxes.
