Boise, Idaho - The Boise Police Department's bomb squad is already off to a hectic year. This week they have already assisted patrol on three different calls, which included a bomb threat and two potentially explosive items, one of those being at a thrift store.

Officers had to respond to a thrift store that just had received some donations. One of those donations was a pineapple-style hand grenade. The Boise Police Department evacuated the store for some time because it was a hand grenade, and they wanted to ensure it wouldn't put anyone in danger. Shortly after the Boise Police Department's bomb squad arrived, the technician determined that the grenade was inert and would be a problem.

That was just the first call they received that day. The second call involved a storage unit that had just been auctioned off, and the highest bidder found a military mortar inside. The Boise PD bomb technician worked with Mountain Home Aire Forec EOD Techs, and the item was safely removed for rendering safe operations at another location.

It didn't stop there. Boise Police were called out to a threat of a bomb in someone's vehicle, and with the assistance of the BPD bomb squad, the technician determined that the report was false.

Last year the BPD's Bomb Squad responded to approximately 40 calls that included suspicious item reports, helping the SOU (Special Operations Unit) and other hazardous situations. The Boise Police Department shared this information on its Facebook page. They have already responded to eight calls in the year's first three months.

Boise's Famous 'Bomb Shelter' Was The Very First of Its Kind

Believe it or not, Boise was home to the first prototype community fallout shelter in the country! It's still around but doesn't have many of the features that were meant to sustain human life in the event of nuclear holocaust anymore. You can read more about its history HERE or take a look around these photos from when it was for sale in 2019.
