Just when we’d gotten excited for Homeland Season 6 to move to New York City in the fall, Showtime has good and bad news. The sixth run of Claire Danes’ counter-terrorism thriller has been moved to 2017, though a Season 7 and 8 renewal is nearly official.

Showtime confirmed as much in a conference call with boss David Nevins, noting that Shameless would fill Homeland’s fall timeslot, likely pushing the latter’s Season 6 premiere to January of 2017. Production will start in the summer, while a deal for Seasons 7 and 8 is in the works, but not officially finalized.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Alex Gansa (himself confirmed through Season 8, as with Danes) wanted the extra time to perfect Season 6's story, given the sustained critical resurgence of the last few seasons.

Elsewhere of Season 6, we know that the move to New York will chronicle the aftermath of a presidential election, particularly the tender transition of power, while Gansa downplayed the likelihood of any significant terrorism plot. Carrie’s stateside return will also enable her to reconnect with some familiar faces (we’ll quietly ignore the late Nicholas Brody also shooting in NYC), while Rupert Friend’s Peter Quinn will also remain a series regular.

Additional details will likely arrive over the summer, but can fans wait until 2017 for Season 6? What should we expect from Homeland seasons beyond?
