It was 1999 when Aaron Peckham, a then-freshman at Cal Tech, launched Urban Dictionary to index student slang spoken on college campuses across the country.

Despite its comedic origins, Peckham's parody forum quickly evolved into a series of unconstrained mini conversations that checked stuffy academic writing at the door; 26 of which are featured in the gallery.

UD IN THE HEADLINES

As the years went by, Urban Dictionary evolved into something more than a warehouse for crude definitions of trendy slang. People and credible institutions started using the site as a reference point to understand the latest cultural trends and memes.

In 2003, the site made international headlines when a judge of the High Court of Justice in the U.K. referenced UD in a legal dispute involving two rappers and lyrical slang. Six years later, UD had amassed nearly 4 million entries and had been receiving approximately 2,000 submissions a day.

UD VS. WIKI

When asked to clarify the differences between UD and Wikipedia by the New York Times in 2009, Peckham noted "every single word on [Urban Dictionary] is written by someone with a point of view, with a personal experience of the word in the entry." Neutrality has nothing to do with it.

Despite losing some of its cultural relevance in the wake of social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and facebook, UD left an indelible mark on the modern English language and youth culture.
