The Rock’s ‘Black Adam’ Finds a Director
Initially conceived as a part of the first Shazam movie, Black Adam — the character’s long-time arch-nemesis — will now get his own standalone film instead. For years, it’s been announced that The Rock would play the movie version of Black Adam, and now the film looks closer than ever.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Black Adam now has a filmmaker who will direct Dwayne Johnson in the movie:
Jaume Collet-Serra, who just wrapped shooting Johnson in Disney’s Jungle Cruise, is reteaming with the A-lister for the DC Comics-based action movie. Beau Flynn of FlynnPictureCo will produce with Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions.
Johnson is something of a creature of habit when it comes to directors; when he finds one he likes he tends to work with them repeatedly. Brad Peyton did San Andreas and Rampage. Rawson Marshall Thurber did Central Intelligence and Skyscraper. And now Collet-Serra will do Black Adam right on the heels of Jungle Cruise.
Shazam made $362 million in theaters worldwide, not bad but certainly not the kind of numbers that would guarantee a sequel, much less a spinoff featuring a relatively less well-known side character. But Shazam didn’t have The Rock, and Black Adam will. That alone might be enough to get the movie made.
