Idaho is one of the strongest and toughest states in America. It has been put through the wringer this past year with wildfires, and unpredictable weather, and has even had to endure zombie deer disease (chronic wasting disease.)

Now, Idaho is facing another threat and this one wants to wipe out our ecosystem.

Idaho Fish & Game is on high alert

Idaho Fish & Game is currently monitoring a situation involving quagga mussels in the Snake River near Twin Falls.

If you're unfamiliar quagga mussels can be extremely destructive to the environment and cause a slew of issues for the ecosystem. According to the Center for Invasive Species Research, quagga mussels can cause problems including increased maintenance costs for "water treatment systems, mussel accumulation on docks, buoys, boat hulls, and anchors", and they can even cut people.

Also, the Center for Invasive Species Research says that quagga mussels can also kill native freshwater mussels and disrupt the feeding habits of surrounding creatures.

"Quagga mussels have once again been detected in the Snake River near Twin Falls," Idaho Fish and Game said in a press release, "While the Idaho State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) detected fewer mussels in 2024 than in 2023, the second treatment to eradicate mussels is a critical step to stop further spread."

"Using experience gained from the 2023 treatment, Fish and Game fisheries biologists are preparing for additional fish mortality throughout the treatment area, especially in the section of river upstream of the Twin Falls power plant that was not treated in 2023."

Idaho Fish and Game will continue to monitor the impact of quagga mussels on local fisheries and you can more about their efforts HERE.
