HBO seems to have bounced back from its string of disappointments with Westworld, but don’t expect True Detective to be granted another shot just yet. If it is, at least Season 1 star Matthew McConaughey is all-in to return for another round with creator Nic Pizzolatto.

Earlier this year saw McConaughey expressing to The Rich Eisen Show his interest in returning to Rustin Cohle, though it would have to be “the right context, the right way.” Now, the Dark Tower and Sing star offered another update to Eisen, still specifying that Nic Pizzolatto had no active Season 3 plans:

Has that ball been advanced any further down the field?

No. But that conversation you and I had caught wings, because I hear that all the time now. ‘So You said you were going to do season 3. When is it coming?’ That ball has not advanced at all. I’ve talked to the creator Nic Pizzolatto who’s taking a little break from it. But if that thing was written well and it came up again, I wouldn’t hesitate for a second … Oh, I’m open to it for sure.

That said, Pizzolatto maintains a development deal at HBO, which was most recently said to take the shape of a Perry Mason series with Robert Downey Jr. producing and starring. There’s every chance (if not hope) that True Detective Season 3 could move forward without Pizzolatto’s direct involvement, but should McConaughey come along for the ride?

Do we want to see Rustin Cohle later in life, or perhaps a new character, American Horror Story-style?
