Mark Hamill Offers an Update on Dark Side Luke Suspicions in ‘The Last Jedi’
The trailers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi seem to be turning the world of Star Wars on its head: bad guys are being good, good guys are turning bad, and Phasma is played by a porg now. (Just kidding about that last one.) The dichotomy between light and dark seems to be blending together, and it’s difficult to tell which side any given character is on, or which side we’re supposed to be on. But Mark Hamill has some reassuring news for any fans who suspected, from the look of things, that he had gone over to the Dark Side.
In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Luke has lost confidence in his ability to make good choices. It haunts him to the core. But he hasn’t gone to the dark side. This isn’t an evil version of him. But it’s still an incarnation of the character I never expected. It has pulled me out of my comfort zone. It’s a real challenge.
This is a Luke we haven’t yet seen, one who’s seen his best intentions cause grief and the deaths of many people. Kylo Ren was his pupil, and, like Anakin before him, he betrayed his master and destroyed his school and joined up with the modern incarnation of the extremist organization Luke spent most of his life fighting against. But the trailers for the movie also seem to show Kylo Ren and Rey, yet another of Luke’s pupils, joining forces — perhaps after Luke refuses to teach her out of fear for what could happen. Up until now, we’ve had dark and light in the Star Wars universe. But in The Last Jedi, it’s not that simple anymore.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters December 15.
