Dangerous Virus Detected In 2 Boise Areas: What You Need To Know
We're in the thick of summer and some of the best activities you can do during the summer take place outside. Also, it's easier now than any other time to lose track of time while you're outside as daylight lasts a lot longer.
A dangerous virus is threatening our safety this summer
We know what you might be thinking so we'll let you know immediately that we're not dealing with COVID-19. Rather, this is a virus transmitted by mosquitoes which is terrifying considering you don't really know when you've suffered a mosquito bite until after it's happened.
Officials recently shared some bad news with us regarding a dangerous virus that is officially active right here in Ada County. In a press release, Ada County officials shared that West Nile virus had been detected in two specific Boise areas.
How bad is West Nile Virus?
According to the Centers for Disease Control, West Nile virus "can result in febrile illness or neurologic disease, including meningitis or encephalitis."
There's also no current treatment for West Nile virus.
The good news is the CDC says that "8 out of 10 infected with West Nile virus do not develop any symptoms." Suppose you're one of the unlucky ones with serious symptoms.
In that case, you can expect to experience "high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness and paralysis."
The CDC also says that 1 out of 10 people who experience severe symptoms that affect the central nervous system end up dying.
So, where was West Nile virus detected in Boise?
According to Ada County Officials, West Nile virus was detected in samples from mosquitoes at Hillcrest Country Club and the intersection of South Gekeler Lane and East Fall Drive, both in Boise.
Stay safe and make sure to protect yourself and your loved ones when you can!
