It is the time of year when diets go out the window and all of us justify gaining a few extra pounds as we eat what is left of Halloween candy, stuff our faces for Thanksgiving, and munch on Christmas cookies and candy all December long. While there is a ton of eating to be had in the next month or so, and much weight will be gained across the state and in the country, which state is the most obese and how does Idaho compare?

The people of Idaho love to eat and we know good food here, but when it comes to comparing to other states, are we eating a little more than we should, or are we not eating enough? WalletHub recently released a list of the most obese states to the least obese. The list used three main categories such as obesity and overweight prevalence, health consequences, and food and fitness. With these criteria, it was determined that West Virginia is the most overweight state, followed by Mississippi and Kentucky to round out the top three. The skinniest state is Colorado, with Utah not far behind and Washington DC involved to round out the bottom three.

While Idaho may not be the skinniest or healthiest state on the list, we aren't obese either. Idaho comes in on the list at 37 out of 51. Idaho is 40 in obesity and overweight prevalence, 16 in health consequences, and 44 in food and fitness. With the main list focusing on adults, a second list on the survey revealed if children were included, things are even better for Idaho, ranking 40.

While there may be some work to still be done to get into the top ten for least obese adults, Idaho seems to be doing a good job of staying fit and not letting the long winters pack on too many pounds. As the holiday season begins, eat a little extra, because compared to other states, we can afford to handle an extra pound or two.
