We're in the heart of spring break and it's one of the most popular times of year to travel (obviously). Here's the thing, if you don't have the proper identification by May, you won't even be allowed to board on an airplane!

Here's what you need to know...

Changes Go Into Effect Beginning May 7, 2025

Look, we get it - a trip to the DMV is never fun but luckily, you don't have to go every year. Plus, if you pay a little more, you can extend the window you're required to go even further out.

Also, if you want to be able to hop on an airplane, you're going to have to go sometime soon anyway.

According to the Idaho Department of Transportation, you will need a "Star Card" AKA "Idaho's REAL ID" in order to board a plane beginning May 7, 2025.

At the time of writing this, that's a little over 50 days away.

What Is An Idaho Star Card?

According to the Idaho Department of Transportation, the Star Card's roots began when Congress passed the "REAL ID Act" which was recommended by the 9/1 Commission to help the government "set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver's licenses."

The Idaho Star Card is simply a driver's license with a unique yellow star at the top corner of your ID.

This means the only difference between a current or standard Idaho driver's license and a Star Card is where you can go.

With a Star Card, you can fly commercially, enter a federal building, national laboratory, or a military base. If you have a current license, you're permitted to legally drive, buy alcohol, use the bank, register to vote, and use social services.

According to the Idaho Department of Transportation, just 54% of Idaho licenses and IDs are Star Cards as of March 1st.

It's also important to note there are other ways to board a plane or access a federal building if you don't have a Star Card. If you have a U.S. Passport, military ID, or "some other form of federally accepted ID."
