It's only March but 2025 has already been a year that's seen some major changes. With DOGE cracking down on government spending, several agencies are taking a closer look at how they operate and how they can save the most money possible.

Now, the Social Security Administration has announced a major change that is coming soon.

What's Happening With Social Security?

A major change was announced by the Social Security Administration that will include a "two-week transition plan" that will eventually conclude on March 31st.

"The Social Security Administration (SSA) is taking proactive steps to enhance the security of its services by implementing stronger identity verification procedures," the Social Security Administration said in a press release.

"The updated measures will further safeguard Social Security records and benefits against fraudulent activity."

The Social Security Administration says they will be cracking down on fraud by requiring recipients to verify their identity in person.

“Americans deserve to have their Social Security records protected with the utmost integrity and vigilance,” Lee Dudek, Acting Commissioner of Social Security said in their press release.

“For far too long, the agency has used antiquated methods for proving identity. Social Security can better protect Americans while expediting service.”

SSA says they're training its staff on the policy change and compliance over the next two weeks before enforcing online digital identity proofing and in-person identity proofing.

How Do Social Security Recipients Feel About The Change?

According to the Associated Press, more than 72.5 million Americans receive benefits through the Social Security Administration. Some critics feel the in-person verification process creates more challenges for recipients with disability or mobility limitations. For recipients who live in the rural areas of Idaho, getting to an SSA office can be even more difficult.

As for the SSA, they say they've taken appropriate measures to ensure the in-person verification will go smoothly.

"SSA recently required nearly all agency employees, including frontline employees in all offices throughout the country, to work in the office five days a week," SSA says.

"This change ensures maximum staffing is available to support the stronger in-person identity proofing requirement."
