First off, I'm here for you and I get it. As a parent who has three kids and supports his entire family with just this job, I can understand what it means to save money wherever you can and to make money where you can. But, what if I told you that you might have money out there waiting for you to claim it just in time for the holidays?

Introducing unclaimed property

According to Idaho State Treasurer's Office, unclaimed property is essentially money but can be in the form of checking accounts, savings accounts, stocks, bonds, and more. Unclaimed property can accumulate for a variety of reasons including forgetting to update an address to forgetting to update your name if you've gotten married (or divorced). Should it be because of a name change, the Idaho State Treasurer's Office says that all you'll need to provide is documentation showing the name change.

If you have deceased relatives, you may also be able to make a claim on unclaimed property as well. According to Idaho State Treasurer's Office, only certain people are allowed to claim property from their deceased relative including:

  • The surviving spouse
  • Children
  • Grandchildren
  • Parents
  • Brothers and sisters
  • Nieces and nephews

According to Idaho State Treasurer's Office, there is an estimated $151,974,143 available in the state of Idaho with $46,490,576 of that belonging to residents in Ada County. Imagine how much nearly $46.5 million dollars could do for the community.

The holidays are quickly approaching and every dollar helps... especially if it belonged to you anyways! You can see if you're owed money here.
