It's an American tradition as old as apple pie. You support your local Girl Scout troop with a monetary donation, and in return you receive some delicious cookies.

Literally everyone loves girl scout cookies. So why is TikTok claiming they're all of the sudden unsafe for human consumption?

What's going on?

A nonprofit group, Moms Across America, claim that Girl Scout cookies were found to contain traces of metals and herbicides. Obviously, if that's true, it's not good at all. Adding fuel to the fire is Joe Rogan claiming the cookies are "toxic as f***" earlier this week.

Are the cookies actually safe to eat?

According to a spokesperson for the Girl Scouts of the USA, their cookies very much meet the safety standards put forth by the FDA:

The health and safety of our customers is our top priority. All Girl Scout cookies are produced by our trusted licensed bakers, who are leaders in their industry and adhere to rigorous food safety standards set by the FDA and other relevant authorities.

How are toxic ingredients getting into the cookies?

Naturally, says the Girl Scouts:

[Heavy metals] can occur naturally in soil. This means that nearly all foods using plant-based ingredients, including organic foods, may contain trace amount. This does not mean that these foods are harmful to consume.

Should I go buy Girl Scout cookies if I'm having a craving?

We're no safety experts, but as far as we know, not a single person has met their demise due to ingesting Girl Scout cookies.
