Sure, traffic cameras are a thing that exist. They've been around for a while, and you've most likely encountered one while driving.

But, what if they were 100% completely automated?

Recently, AI cameras were used to detect some vicious wildfires here in Idaho, helping combat the blaze faster than humans alone. That makes sense. But would it make sense to have AI in charge of our traffic laws?

Yes, there are already automated traffic cameras here in Idaho, even if drivers are very much not fans of it. However, there are still humans involved in that process.

What if the camera was completely powered by AI? As in, completely. Meaning, the entire process.

Imagine you're minding your own business, and you happen to be speeding. An AI camera catches you, instantly identifies you and your vehicle from your license plate, calculates your infraction and the fine in a matter of seconds, and before you hit the next stop light you've got an email on your phone telling you you're due in traffic court.

You can see how this could end up causing a multitude of issues. However, it could certainly streamline the process, possibly saving the city some money. At what cost? Probably more traffic tickets for you and I, seeing as how we are very likely to lose in court against an AI judge.

Traffic and in-car dash cameras aren't only good for catching folks who are speeding on the roads.  Sometimes, they can play a vital part in police investigations where the only witness present is the camera itself.
