Alabama Senator Doug Jones on the Issues
Alabama has a new senator, and he's the first Democrat to take control of the otherwise Republican state in almost two decades.
What was once a long shot is now a reality, after his opponent, Roy S. Moore had his campaign plagued with accusations of sexual abuse and child molestation.
For the red state that heavily leans pro-life and pro-God, here's where their newest leader stands on those issues.
“I fully support a woman's freedom to choose what happens to her own body. That is an intensely, intensely personal decision that only she, in consultation with her god, her doctor, her partner or family, that's her choice,” Doug Jones stated to AL.com
In an interview with MSNBC, Jones stated our current gun laws have "limitations" and has called for expanded background checks.
Jones was endorsed by The Human Rights Campaign, an LGBT rights advocacy group, after he criticized President Trump's administration for banning transgender people from serving in the military.
While Jones criticizes President Trump, he has no problem fully supporting former President Obama and the policies President Obama passed. On his campaign website, Jones writes, "I am disturbed about repeated efforts to repeal the bill or weaken it."
One item Doug Jones sides with the current administration on, is border control. His team told Politifact, "Doug supports border security - he is committed to ensuring the national security of the United States."
He also wrote on his Twitter back on September 20th that, "I've supported the President and his agenda from day one, and that includes building the wall."
