Boise State Falls to Northwestern, Breaks Record For Most Losses

It's been a great run on the hardwood in Boise, but following the first round of March Madness, Boise State will once again not be advancing in the big dance.

It was a well played game, a tough fight, yet the Broncos come up empty handed against a Northwestern team that has been on a roll. While many Boise State fans joked that they had never heard of Northwestern University--the team was actually dominant, defeating the likes of Purdue and University of Indiana-- two programs expected to make deep runs this March.

Because Boise State has seen success on the football field--which operate very differently than basketball, it's easy to expect fans to start saying there needs to be a coaching change or that the team is choking. Here's the reality: this is March and anyone can win. Just ask the University of Arizona who many experts though could be National Champions this season.

The Broncos battled through the first half but by the time the second half came around, it was obvious that Boise's starters were totally gassed--that was the difference maker as Northwestern finally pulled away and won.

Going into this game, Boise State was tied with Eastern Kentucky for most losses in March Madness without a win. That tie is now broken and Boise State is a rough 0-9 in the tournament-- the outright record holder.

Just making it to the big dance two years in a row is a massive win for the Boise State program and fans need to realize that.

Boise State's Most Underappreciated Star

Boise State seems to mean "football" for most, right? On a national stage, after all, it's the blue turf and the success that the Broncos have had on it that made the university a household name. What happens on the hardwood, however, is far from appreciated at the level that it should be. Leon Rice came to Boise State as a blessing from one of the most powerful basketball programs in the nation: Gonzaga University. Now, the winningest basketball coach in the history of the school seems to take immediate heat if the Broncos aren't in the Final Four. Spoiled by wins on the football field, fans seem to expect the same of the basketball program but when the investment in basketball is so much less than football--can you really have these types of expectations!?
