Despite a 4% decrease in cyberattacks compared to previous years, the state faces significant challenges. Notably, California reported the highest number of personal data breaches in the country, with over 7,000 cases. The financial toll of internet crimes in the Golden State is staggering, totaling $2,159,454,513 lost, making it the state with the largest amount of money lost due to these crimes. Furthermore, victims in California suffer the most financially, with an average loss of $27,947 per victim.

Washington state, ranking seventh, reported 186 cyberattacks per 100,000 people. This state has seen a dramatic increase in extortion cases, with a 108% jump from previous years. Additionally, residents frequently fall prey to non-payment/non-delivery scams, with over 1,000 cases reported. On a somewhat brighter note, the average loss per victim in Washington was $19,773, which, while still substantial, represents a 25% decrease from the losses recorded in 2022.
