Another state has decided to break federal law legalizing Marijuana. Unlike recent states that have been primarily in the Western United states, this one is east of the great river.
Talk about a quick turnaround -- just two days after it was approved by the state Senate, the Illinois House on Friday voted to approve recreational marijuana across the state.The new law, which would go into effect on January 1st, 2020, needs only the signature of Governor J.B. Pritzker to become law.
Clearly, that won't be a problem."This will have a transformational impact on our state, creating opportunity in the communities that need it most and giving so many a second chance," Pritzer says. "In the interest of equity and criminal justice reform, I look forward to signing this monumental legislation.
The continued action begs the question, "Why have so many state governments suddenly turned around on weed? Is it wrong for it to be legal in some states, but not in others? Some believe it is only a matter of time before weed is legal in all fifty states. Currently the state of Idaho is surrounded by states that have made the sale of Marijuana legal.
Governor Brad Little, along with a majority of the state legislature, vow to continue to keep marijuana illegal in the Gem State. The Trump Department of Justice has not responded to the decision by Illinois.
