Parents are getting another healthy TV option for the kids with a new channel that flips on this week.  It will have programming just for kids all day long, and it will be a first for Idaho Public Television.

I can't prove it, but it's my gut feeling that my elementary-aged daughters are getting great grades now because I parked them in front of the TV to watch Wordgirl as toddlers.  Soak up that grammar, kiddos!  Screen time is okay as long as they're learning constructive things, or at least that's what we tell ourselves.  There's more opportunity to produce smart kids coming this week, while moms get some things done around the house.

The Idaho Kids Channel launches on Thursday February 1, with shows like Sesame Street, Arthur, Daniel Tiger, Wordgirl, Clifford the Big Red Dog, and the Cat in the Hat.  And a brand new show called Pinkalicious and Peterrific will debut on February 19th.

Public television relies on financial help, and big boosts from several Idaho companies will help make this kids' channel happen.  Boise Weekly says four founding sponsors—CapEd Credit Union, Albertsons, the Idaho College Savings Program and the Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation High Five initiative—have made year-long commitments to help fund operating and programming costs for the Idaho Kids Channel.

IdahoPTV is planning a free screening of some of its programming at Overland Park Cinemas in Boise on Saturday February 10th at 10:30am, and it's free.  Just RSVP and let them know you and the kids are coming.

PBS also has a Kids Writers Contest for grades K-3 and the deadline to enter is March 31st.  That's a good opportunity to show off those Wordgirl smarts.  Good luck.
