Fomrer Vice President Joe Biden, who some call a moderate Democrat, has joined the chorus of fellow Democrats in calling for an assault weapons ban. The former vice president is calling for a ban on assault weapons and a federal gun buyback program in response to the recent mass shootings.  Biden's move comes as the nation mourns the innocent Americans who were killed by lone gunmen in Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas.  President Donald Trump is visiting both cities Wednesday.  Joe Biden was in Boise Tuesday raising money at a private event.

Biden told CNN's Anderson Cooper that assault weapons "should be illegal - period", adding "the Second Amendment doesn't say you can't restrict the kinds of weapons people can own." Biden also called for universal background checks and said he would establish a federal gun buyback program aimed at reducing the number of firearms on the streets.

Biden is not alone in calling for a weapons ban.  Another 2020 Democrat Candidate, Senator Kamala Harris of California, told MSNBC that if elected, Congress has 100 days to pass gun control legislation.  If Congress does not act, she will pass an executive action to address the situation.'

Would a buyback program help reduce mass shootings?  Does the 2nd Amendment protect the right to own assault weapons?
